Eliminate contamination sources<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u2460&emsp;Multi-nuclide removal equipment, etc.<\/li>\r\n<li>\u2461&emsp;Remove contaminated water in the trench <sup>(Note 3)<\/sup><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>2. <span class=\"u_txt\">Isolate<\/span> water from contamination<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u2462&emsp;Pump up ground water for bypassing<\/li>\r\n<li>\u2463&emsp;Pump up ground water near buildings<\/li>\r\n<li>\u2464&emsp;Land-side impermeable walls<\/li>\r\n<li>\u2465&emsp;Waterproof pavement<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<p>3. <span class=\"u_txt\">Prevent leakage<\/span> of contaminated water<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u2466&emsp;Soil improvement by sodium silicate<\/li>\r\n<li>\u2467&emsp;Sea-side impermeable walls<\/li>\r\n<li>\u2468&emsp;Increase tanks (welded-joint tanks)<\/li>\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 10px;\">&emsp;(Note 3) Underground tunnel containing pipes.<\/p>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<h3 class=\"ptitle\">Multi-nuclide removal equipment (ALPS), etc.<\/h3>\r\n<p style=\"float: right;font-size: 16px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/decommissioning\/sdcwm_04.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>High-performance multi-nuclide removal equipment<\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"list\">\r\n<li>This equipment removes radionuclides from the contaminated water in tanks and reduces risks.<\/li>\r\n<li>Treatment of contaminated water (RO concentrated salt water) was completed in May 2015 via multi-nuclide removal equipment, additional multi-nuclide removal equipment installed by TEPCO (operation commenced in September 2014) and a subsidy project of the Japanese Government (operation commenced in October 2014).<\/li>\r\n<li>Strontium-treated water from equipment other than ALPS is being re-treated in ALPS.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<h3 class=\"ptitle\">Land-side impermeable walls<\/h3>\r\n<p style=\"float: right;font-size: 16px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/decommissioning\/sdcwm_05.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>Opening\/closure of frozen pipes<\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"list\">\r\n<li>Land-side impermeable walls surround the buildings and reduce groundwater inflow into the same.<\/li>\r\n<li>Freezing started on the sea side and part of the mountain side from March 2016 and on 95% of the mountain side from June 2016. From December 2016, freezing started for two of seven unfrozen sections on the mountain side.<\/li>\r\n<li>On the sea side, the underground temperature declined below 0&#08451; throughout the scope requiring freezing except the unfrozen parts under the seawater pipe trenches and the areas above groundwater level in October 2016.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<h3 class=\"ptitle\">Sea-side impermeable walls<\/h3>\r\n<p style=\"float: right;font-size: 16px;\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/decommissioning\/sdcwm_06.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>&emsp;&emsp;&emsp;Sea-side impermeable walls<\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"list\">\r\n<li>Impermeable walls are being installed on the sea side of Units 1-4, to prevent the contaminated groundwater from flowing into the sea.<\/li>\r\n<li>The installation of steel pipe sheet piles was completed in September 2015 and they were connected in October 2015.
