Strategic plan for fuel debris retrieval

Introduction

The most recent strategic plan for fuel debris retrieval is explained here, according to 'Technical Strategic Plan 2016 for Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holding, Inc.' (SP2016) edited by Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation(NDF). In the following page, some parts of SP2016 are quoted. Then, some words and/or sentences are changed from the original, by permission of NDF.

Study on the strategic plan for fuel debris retrieval

Although the fuel debris is in a certain stable condition at present, it needs to be retrieved as soon as reasonably achievable with proven technologies through careful preparations and, store it in a stable condition in the site in order to reduce further risks.

This should proceed with the following steps:

  1. Maintaining and management of stable condition of fuel debris retrieval
  2. Safe retrieval of fuel debris
  3. Stable storage of retrieved fuel debris after collection and transport

Since the studies cover a wide range of issues, the structure of requirements which is the backbone of the approaches is shown in Fig. 1 in order to illustrate the entire image.
